Clinical Calculator

NEWS2 Calculator for early recognition

Calculate the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) for systematic assessment of the patient's clinical condition. Panixa Med includes NEWS2 calculator, Braden Scale, Glasgow Coma Scale and other clinical calculators for healthcare professionals.

Respiratory rate

Abnormal respiratory rate is often the first sign of clinical deterioration. NEWS2 scores respiratory rate from ≤8 to ≥25.

Oxygen saturation

SpO2 is measured with pulse oximetry. NEWS2 has two scales — Scale 1 for patients without hypercapnia, Scale 2 for patients with known hypercapnic respiratory failure.

Blood pressure and pulse

Systolic blood pressure and pulse are scored in NEWS2 based on deviation from normal range. Hypotension and tachycardia indicate potential sepsis.

Temperature

Body temperature is assessed for signs of infection or hypothermia. Fever (>38°C) or hypothermia (<35°C) scores in NEWS2.

Consciousness (ACVPU)

Level of consciousness is assessed using the ACVPU scale: Alert, Confusion, Voice, Pain, Unresponsive.

Total score and actions

Total NEWS2 score categorises the patient into low, moderate or high risk. Panixa Med provides clinical recommendations for follow-up.

What is NEWS2?

NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score 2) is a standardised system for early recognition of patients at risk of clinical deterioration. The system scores six physiological parameters. NEWS2 is implemented in hospitals and recommended for systematic observation of patients.

NEWS2 score and clinical actions

A NEWS2 score of 0–4 indicates low risk. A score of 5–6 indicates moderate risk — the patient should be assessed by a doctor within 1 hour. A score ≥7 indicates high risk and requires immediate medical assessment.
